Great Shop + Great Yarn = Great Time (a yarn shop review)

High on Yarn Fumes

Samples on display at The Sated Sheep
Allison displays her knitted samples in wooden embroidery hoops. How clever is that?

Ready for the pretty? Good because I have a lot of pretty to show. The Sated Sheep has put together an inventory focused on hand dyed yarns. That is not all they carry, but this is a shop that features artisan yarns. I went with the intention of buying from a hand dyer and this shop gave me lots to pick from.

yarns from The Sated Sheep LYS
Yarns from The Sheepwalk, a hand dyer from Bandera Texas. I bought from her. Yep. She got me to add to my stash. More details on that below.

And lots more. There is some Rowan in there. Some Blue Sky Heron. Some Sweet Georgia, Some Malabrigo. Some Stella Jacq.

They also carry Bronotta Yarns. Now the maker of Bronotta, Arlene, is a friend and I’ve shown you her yarns before. The Sated Sheep picked her up and that makes five LYS’ that carry Bronotta. She is getting to be a local sensation. I ran into her there, at The Stated Sheep, and we had a nice long chat. I’m gonna have to do a whole post on Bronotta Yarns and Arlene herself as an artisan. I have to get it done before the Yarn Harlot or some other knitting rockstar discovers her and she gets famous and has no time for me. That post will be another day, but don’t let me forget.

Keep going!

Great! LYS’ are magical places. Fun, wonderful, magic places that suck up your money but you don’t really mind about that.

If you are ever up here in St Louis I recommend Knitorious. It’s where I just bought my Madeline Tosh 100% superwash merino ($22.50/skein) [Most expensive yarn I have EVER bought, but so nice to work with!]. My Mother-in-law is right the owner (or the lady who is there most of the time anyway) is a bit stuck up, but they have a FAB selection, and we keep losing LYS’!

Thanks for the tour. I just love LYS’s and it looks like this one rocks! I’m jealous! I followed a few of the links you included about the hand-dyed yarns. That was even more yarn eye candy. 🙂

hehe

All part of my evil plan. But if you can’t get the Dripping Springs Texas (too bad cuz its a nice town) then maybe I’ve inspired a few crafters to make trips to their own LYs’s out there.

I am soooo jealous! After a brief moment (or 2) of insanity, I decided that a day trip to Austin from Birmingham for yarn is out of the question. I guess I’ll just have to wait till they go on-line. You will let us know won’t you? Where have all of our LYS’ s gone? I’m still drooling over your slide show. Thanks so much for sharing. Btw really enjoyed video on continental knitting. Even though I’m a 30 yr crocheter I took a class in cont knitting 5 yrs ago. Couldn’t get my hands and brain coordinated. Now you… Read more »

About coming to Austin for yarn: We have a Hill Country Yarn Crawl every year in October. The Sated Sheep being a new shop won’t be on the crawl (they have to be in business for a year) but… they will be within striking distance of the other fourteen yarn shops on the crawl. That might be worth a drive. About the knitting: Dooooo it. Think of all the new patterns you could try and the hours you could spend on ravelry and the new yarns you will have to buy to make it all. On second thought don’t think… Read more »
