Crochet Spider Webs! – a free pattern

Crochet Spider Webs - a free pattern

There is pretty much only one time of year that I get asked how to crochet a spider web and this is it. (In a month I’ll be getting questions about snowflakes.) That’s because there is only one time of year when a person needs a crochet spider web. But when it Halloween you need one. In fact you may need more than one. You may need lots. And you may need them in all sorts of sizes so you can cover your entire home, yard, all of your pets, and maybe even that dead car in your neighbor’s driveway with crochet spider webs.

Fortunately for you crochet spider webs are dead simple and quick. And I have an easy pattern/formula that will get you a spider web of any size.

How to Crochet Spider Webs

Some Stitch Abbreviations
  • ch – chain stitch
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • dc – double crochet (which is a treble in UK crochet convention)

You can use any yarn and hook. I’m using kitchen cotton in worsted with a size G (4mm).

Ch 5 and join with a sl st to form a ring.

Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as a dc) and place a split ring marker in that last chain. ch 1, *dc in the ring, ch 1* seven times, join with a sl st at the marker. You should have 8 dc’s and 8 ch-1 spaces.

This marker may be unnecessary right now but it will come in handy in later rounds and I’m just establishing a routine.

Round 2: Ch 3 (counts as a dc) and place a split ring marker in that last chain. ch 3, *dc in the next dc from previous round, ch 3* seven times, join with a sl st at the marker.

Round 3: Ch 3 (counts as a dc) and place a split ring marker in that last chain. ch 5, *dc in the next dc from previous round, ch 5* seven times, join with a sl st at the marker.

Round 4: Ch 3 (counts as a dc) and place a split ring marker in that last chain. ch 7, *dc in the next dc from previous round, ch 7* seven times, join with a sl st at the marker.

Keep going until your spider web is big enough. With every round, add 2 to those chain spaces between the double crochets.

Every round has 2 more chains in the chain spaces

Or… the number of chains in the spaces = (Round # – 1) * 2 + 1.

I’m very, very sorry but that just slipped out. I’m a geek and sometimes I just can’t help myself.

Ignore that math stuff. Just pretend I never even mentioned it and have fun making crochet spider webs!

What a neat idea! Never crossed my mind to crochet a spidet web. But I am “foot” deep into my crochet wool socks and I will not stop for a spider web. I have become an obsessed hooker. But I will tuck this away for next year or maybe next week who knows lol. Thanks for sharing this cute pattern AND the inspiration it stirs.
