Is there anything better than free patterns? Oh yes. There are patterns that are free for a limited time. Scoring a pattern that I got for free but everyone else had to pay $6 for makes me feel pretty clever. I like to share that clever feeling so from now on I’m going to have a “Deal of the Day” over there on the left (if your on a mobile I think its down and after this post). I’ll keep that spot filled with a limited-time freebie whenever I can so check it often.
Some Designers Run Free Promotionals
Sometimes when a designer releases a new pattern they will make it free for the first day/week/month. Why? Because it makes the pattern quite popular quite fast. Pattern libraries, like ravelry, put those at the top of their list. Once the promotion is over, that pattern is at the top where everyone can see it and now it costs $6 (or whatever).
I love this trick. I use it myself when I release a new pattern. I bet you love it too right? Right. So lets get to the links that I know you all want to click because they lead to those limited time freebies. But first some disclaimers:
- I used to do this in a raverly forum but it turned into a bit of a nightmare for me. Because those forum posts stay up forever, some readers, some very confused readers, would click on a link I’d made a month ago, find that they pattern was no longer free, and complain. I got MANY complaints. Some were private messages. Some were not so private. I’m hoping this format will be easier to manage. When the deal is over, I can take my link down. If anyone does post a nasty and/or hopelessly confused message about being tricked or ripped off, I can manage it much better here because this is my site. You’re in my world now, buddy!
- But unlike a little sidebar link, this post will be around forever. So let me just say that all of these patterns were free or had working freebie coupon codes when I hit the publish button. They may not by the time you read read this. Better luck next time.
- If you like the pattern enough to download it, please give the author a boost. Raverly does not rank patterns by how many times they are downloaded but by how many people hit that “add to favorites button”. I think if you take advantage of a freebie offer you are obligated to hit that button. So does the Feline Overlord. If we find out you didn’t click the favorite button, Feline Overlord may come to your door and ask you why. Then she will shed all over your yarn stash. Then she will demand some mackerel.
Five Limited Time Freebies!
Isn’t that gorgeous? Wake is one of ten patterns Kephren Pritchett has published in her e-book Knitting the Beach. the pattern is normally $6 but
this pattern will be free until Friday August 21, 8:30 pm central time, in celebration of my birthday! Just add it to your cart and the discount will be applied when you check out. Happy knitting everybody!
Go grab the pattern, hit that favorite button, and then come back. I got more.
Vanessa Ives MKAL by bunnymuff
MKAL – Mystery Knit-A-Long. This is high risk knitting right here.
Its a mystery and so you don’t know exactly what you are making until its done. All the designer will say is that its a shawl that is inspired by the character of Vanessa Ives from Penny Dreadful.
If you’ve never done a mystery knit or crochet then you really should try one. They are great for group-building and making new friends. You get a “clues” (pattern instructions) for each section, chat in ravelry with everyone about how it is going, and post lots of pictures along the way. If your active and involved, you’ll get to know everyone who is in the A-Long.
Enjoy this pattern for free for the duration of the MKAL
COUPON CODE: Vanessa
Autumn is Coming by Benjamin Matthews
This knit cowl is free until… today. Not sure when that promotion expires but its working as of right now. I hope its still working by the time you read this.
Benjamin Matthews is a Texas boy so you know I’m going to give him a plug whenever I can. He works out of the Lucky Ewe and I’ve met him. I remember him. I doubt very much if he remembers me. 🙂
For The Love Of Friends by Samantha Crane
The designer Samantha Crane made the prototype of this cowl for a good friend of hers in a specially commissioned colorway. Its obviously a piece that has meaning for her and I get that. I have designed things myself that are really all about someone important to me.
This Pattern will be free until September 1st, at which point it will cost $3.00 USD. Just Click on “Buy Now” and the discount will be applied automatically.
Anything by Uniquely More
Uniquely More is a crochet designer with a flare for the kitchy! She is running a promotional that applies to any pattern in her raverly store.
Use the coupon code “celebrate” to get one pattern of your choosing for free. That coupon is “for today only” and I have no idea when it started. The clock is ticking.
There you go. Five Freebies on a Thursday! I hope you got them all. And keep an eye on the Deal of the Day. When I know of a good limited-time-freebie pattern I’ll be putting it there. Don’t let ad blindness keep you from your freebie. And as always, Enjoy!
Every Thursday I babble on about stuff that I like and figure other crafters will like too. Its the Weekly Rec and you can find the old ones right here.

Thank you for featuring my pattern! I hope you all enjoy knitting it. There will be six patterns in the e-book Knitting the Beach when the collection is complete. You can see it here: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/sources/knitting-the-beach
You are VERY WELCOME! Its a gorgeous shawl so thank-you for making it free for just a little while. I for one can’t wait to see what you come up with next. 🙂
Victorian and dark, enjoy my new MKAL for October. Much appreciation for sharing!!
You must be bunnymuff! lol
Thank-you for the wonderful A-Long. I’m in btw. Just love Vanessa and I can’t wait to see how the shawl turns out. Thanks for the free-opt-in period.
Thanks for finding and sharing these patterns, Jenn. And for explaining about the significance of the rav “favorite” button. I had no idea!
You are very welcome! Yes (about that fav button) I didn’t understand the significance of that little button until I depended on it for pattern sales myself. I wish raverly made that clearer for people but .
Following up on the email alert: the button is there, but clicking it doesn’t actually result in email alerts. Just an FYI 🙂
Hmm. I do. When I click the button I receive a notice in my email asking me to confirm my subscription. After that I get a notice from rovingcrafters.comments@gmail.com when a reply is made.
Do you get the confirmation request? And have you ever signed up here with your email ( and not just a wordpress acct)?
Hmmm. I don’t know. But I used to get email notices with the old set-up. I’ll try again. Hang on…I’m going in!
Okay, following up: I did get a subscription confirmation request, which I probably ignored last time because I thought it was for new posts (which I already get a notice for, through Feedly) instead of for new comments. But this time I subscribed again anyway, and maybe all will be well. I just don’t want to miss any follow-up comments 🙂
ok. Let’s give this a try! Hope you get the email notice.
Nope. Now I get an email telling me you’ve put up a new post, though. But I already know that because I subscribe through Feedly. Oh well. I guess I’ll just have to try to remember to come back and revisit posts where I’ve left a comment or question.
Carry on!
*grumble grumble*
I’ll keep at it.
Got your post twice?? Fur in my stash! Lol! she’ll probably have to tell one of my furry creatures to move over. This is a win win win. Win for us win for the designer and win for you. Thank you so much for this.
You got my post twice? Not sure what that means…
Thank you so much for featuring my pattern! I can’t tell you how much that means to me. This is my first pattern, and you’re right, it was a work of love and it is very special. Thank you again, so very much! I am beyond amazed.
I’m so happy to! The For The Love Of Friends is just lovely. Thanks for sharing it with all of us.
It is my pleasure! I am so happy that you like it!
