Never Forget

Patriot Day. Its a day created and named so that we would never forget. There are many heroes from September 11, 2001 who need to be remembered and there is no way I can name them all here. But I can name one. Moira Smith.

Long before planes crashed into the Trade Center Towers, Officer Smith was decorated hero. In August of 1991 a subway crashed in Union Square. She saved dozens of lives that day. She was awarded the Distinguished Duty Medal for her actions. On September 11, 2001 she saved dozens, maybe hundreds more. And it cost her her own life.

Barbuti said they have at least two pictures from newspaper photographers showing Smith rescuing people trapped inside Tower Two. Like 13 of the 23 city police officers killed at the World Trade Center, Smith’s body hasn’t been found.

After that article, her remains were found. She was officially laid to rest on what would have been her 39th birthday. She left behind a husband and daughter. She left behind people who owned her their lives. She left behind a city and a nation that should never forget her.

I promise I won’t. Please join me in that.

Often referred to colloquially as 9/11, Patriot Day is marked every year on September 11, in memory of the nearly 3,000 people who died in the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

I can’t forget..my husband was supposed to be there, missed his plane. He was in Tower 7 when the earlier bomb went off. This summer, we visited the memorial. It was heartbreaking and healing at the same time.

I can’t imagine what a near miss like that must have felt like. Give him a hug.

Thank you for the post. I was in California that day and was at work when second tower went down. Our General Manager invited all to the conference room where we held hands and he led us in prayer. Been watching the TV coverage all day. Those first responders were some incredibly brave and selfless people. Never Forget.

Many people felt the same way. That’s one of the reasons we have to remember. Safety and freedom come with a price.

I was in Europe this time. When have seen the towers and the first plane in the television, first think that this only some tricky film. But then… Oh that was dreadful, horrible! The many poor people! And the families! Terrible!
